USA Wheelchair Football League

Service Area: National

Goal: Improve the physical and mental health of at least 125 veterans across 14 teams within the USA Wheelchair Football League

In 2019, an NFL-BWF Healthy Lifestyles and Creating Communities (HLCC) investment to Move United launched the USA Wheelchair Football League. The first of its kind opportunity for adults with disabilities to play organized football, the league started with 4 teams in Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Kansas City, Missouri and has grown to now include eleven teams competing in tournaments annually that culminate with a championship game as part of the NFL’s fan experience week at the Super Bowl. The USA Wheelchair Football League rules were modeled after the NFL game with adaptations to ensure the integrity and safety of the game while keeping it fast paced and highly enjoyable to fans and players alike. Since 2019, Move United has helped more than 575 athletes get off the sidelines and into the game through learn-to-play clinics, practice and development opportunities, camps, scrimmages, and tournaments that bring together the best adaptive athletes from across the country. Veterans who participate in the league improve their quality of life through the physical, psychological, and social benefits that result from engagement in adaptive sports. With this NFL-BWF investment Move United will continue to support the existing eleven teams, finish developing a second team in the greater Los Angeles area, and launch a new team in Las Vegas and New England. In sum, this funding will improve the physical and mental health of at least 125 veterans across 14 teams within the USA Wheelchair Football League.
