According to the Legal Services Corporation, civil legal problems, from threatened evictions to bad paper discharges from the military are often the greatest obstacles to a veteran’s health, housing, stability, and productivity. In 2017, 71% of households with veterans or other military personnel reported experiencing a civil legal problem in the past year and 21% percent of those households reported experiencing six or more legal problems in the preceding year. In 2021, 92% of local partners in the GY6 network reported that the veterans they served were seeking legal services, but only 20% of the collaboratives were fully satisfying the needs for those services. Recognizing this gap in their own service area, The Warrior Alliance (TWA) leveraged their collaborative model to establish the Veteran Legal Service Network (VLSN). VLSN is a collaborative effort led by The Warrior Alliance to address the issue highlighted across the legal services space and supported by LPSAT findings that community-level veteran service providers often struggle to connect veterans to legal services. VLSN is a platform with the potential to be replicated nationwide as a scalable solution to connect veterans to legal services. This BWF grant will connect veterans experiencing adverse social determinants of health to legal advocates to address unmet legal needs using the Veteran Legal Service Network platform.
