Position Overview:

The Donor Relations Manager is responsible for leading all facets of BWF relationship management and engagement with its donor base.  Our individual, family and foundation donors make our work possible through their ongoing and exceptional generosity.  The Donor Relations Manager will conduct and oversee activities with our donor base, including cultivation, retention, growth, and administrative aspects of the BWF growth plan, including an integrated approach to fundraising that involves all disciplines within BWF and a supporting suite of technology products that enhance our development capability.  Reporting to the Chief Growth and Marketing Officer and in collaboration with Strategic Partnerships Manager and the Development Operations Manager, the Donor Relations Manager oversees development efforts focused on the management and cultivation of donor relationships and related outreach, including timely, personalized and strategic communications needs for our current and prospective donor base.  This role will be conversant in a range of development programs and options, including donor relations, technology-based fundraising, creative development of new fundraising programs, and the interpersonal skills required for a diverse set of relationship management requirements.  These skills will be essential so that the Donor Relations Manager can create short and long-term plans for donor retention, expansion of our donor base, diversification of revenue streams (recurring giving, direct marketing, and small contributions), and identification of new opportunities.  This is a growth-focused role for an experienced and proven Donor Relations professional or similar background, with the opportunity to pursue results-focused development goals with clear KPIs.

Essential Job Responsibilities

The primary functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Partner with the Chief Growth and Marketing Officer and Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) to contribute to annual growth plans and forecasts via development of revenue projections attributed to donor contributions (recurring, retained, prospective and incremental)
  • Partner with the Development Operations Manager to maintain, update, and optimize donor data through Salesforce, including exploration of new initiatives and outreach designed to drive donor retention, incremental giving, and expansion of the BWF donor base
  • In partnership with the leadership team, review the annual integrated operations plan to identify and categorize the donor fundraising potential and donor relations components of all BWF activities and events, inclusive of new portfolio initiatives
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and organizer for the BWF Development team on donor-focused development initiatives including SUFH sponsorship (and all related sponsorship opportunities, including but not limited to the Green Room, Service Member Dinner, VIP Reception, etc.), SUFH ticketing, VIP and priority donor list management, SUFH auction, vendor management for auction and donor relations technology platforms, and third-party fundraising platforms like Classy
  • In partnership with the Strategic Partnerships Manager and Development Operations Manager, support continuous, effective integration of development requirements and information needs with all other disciplines within the BWF team, including Events, Operations, Communications, Charitable Investments and NVI
  • Develop, implement and refresh a proactive donor and individual giving strategy to include categorization of events, revenue projections by event and initiative, and an ongoing evaluation of emerging technologies and best practices for fundraising, both relative to veteran nonprofits and the broader nonprofit sector
  • Meticulously track development opportunities and campaigns in salesforce, including meeting notes and tasks. Partner with the Development Operations Manager in meticulous and on time delivery of tax receipts and thank you notes
  • Lead the development of sponsorship opportunities, ticketing plans, talent-based fundraising opportunities, and related/adjacent options for optimizing donor-based revenue potential at existing and new BWF events
  • Partner with the Development Operations Manager to research and evaluate emerging technology solutions for lead management, lead acquisition, CRM, and direct marketing opportunities for BWF
  • Partner with the Communications Manager to develop comprehensive, focused, customizable, relevant and regularly refreshed marketing materials to support all sponsorship and donor relations/cultivation efforts. Create customizable templates and maintain a library of supporting documents to facilitate expedited response time for custom proposals and past presentations
  • Partner with Events Manager to reinforce existing and create new donor-driven revenue generating potential for events; this effort includes, but is not limited to, the incorporation of new technology for donor engagement and fundraising at events, new sponsorship opportunities at existing events, and reimagining/repurposing event structure to optimize fundraising potential
  • Contribute ideation, preparation and delivery of tactical and strategic updates on donor relations requested by the leadership team, board of directors and other priority donors
  • Develop a comprehensive list and calendar of key delivery dates for major grants and sources, including priority individual donors, family and individual foundations, new foundation sources, and initiatives (Give2, matching efforts, etc.) to ensure timely response and retention/growth of established donor resource base
  • Contribute, monitor and refresh donor-related information, requirements and deadlines to the annual development calendar, including, but not limited to, Stand Up For Heroes NY, future SUFH events in new markets, Washington, DC fundraising, annual campaigns (Giving Tuesday, Veterans Day, etc.), and those new initiatives confirmed by BWF leadership
  • Represent the Bob Woodruff Foundation at priority events for donor relations, including all primary fundraising events, VOWS events, and other new opportunities as determined by the Donor Relations Manager, Chief Growth and Marketing Officer and the Executive Director
  • Partner with the Director of Administration and Finance to populate annual revenue worksheet and fundraising updates for key events to ensure timely, accurate reporting of donor-driven fundraising performance
  • Partner with Director of Administration and Finance to ensure compliance with all grant requirements and timelines including interim and final reports
  • Partner with the Chief Growth and Marketing Officer to develop and implement donor prospecting strategy for BWF annual plan as well as expansion potential for pursuit (high net worth individuals, family foundations, etc.)
  • Maintain, update and refresh insights on priority relationships and individual donors to ensure timely and personalized recommendations to the founders and Board of Directors as required
  • Serve as a leadership representative of BWF when interacting with all key stakeholder groups, including the leadership team, the Board of Directors, the Leadership Council, senior leaders of the government, DoD and the private sector, and veterans, their families and caregivers
  • Maintain knowledge of the foundation’s mission, priorities, and positions
  • Regularly travel to events and other development opportunities for the foundation, CI events, and other requirements as identified by BWF leadership

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, business development, nonprofit management and development or related field
  • 5-7 years’ experience in a nonprofit development role or for-profit business development role; national-level experience preferred
  • Experience in the military or veteran space preferred
  • Exceptional skills in the areas of interpersonal interactions, professional discretion, confidentiality and accountability
  • High degree of initiative and strategic problem solving, focused on ideal outcome vs. most achievable outcome
  • Proven track record of development experience, including annual, event-based, and customizable programs and initiatives to drive fundraising performance
  • Experience supporting the fundraising and sponsor relations aspects of complex events of varying sizes and across multiple objectives (fundraising, awareness, networking/influencer events, etc.)
  • Able to drive the on-time and on-brand delivery of fundraising campaigns, development components of event management, and related communications and collateral deliverables
  • Strong interest in and understanding of the Bob Woodruff Foundation’s mission; related work experience with military service members or veterans preferred
  • Effective networker and experience in strengthening relations with development partners across the full range of disciplines, including communications and sponsor relations
  • Excellent verbal and written communications, especially adept at developing and pitching persuasive development presentations and execution plans
  • Able to work effectively as part of a small, proactive team
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Salesforce and other CRM systems as designated by the foundation
  • Ability to work for extended days and on weekends during critical points in grant or program cycles or for major planned events
  • Willingness to travel when appropriate
