STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK - The 105 anniversary of the end of World War I will be remembered at the Annual Veterans Day Observance at Ocean View Cemetery, 3315 Amboy Rd. Staten Island, NY 10306 on Saturday, November 11th at 11AM.
The annual ceremony has been held since 1919 at the site of
the WWI Monument located in the cemetery.
Originally dubbed Armistice Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919, Veterans Day was designated in its place by the 38th Congress at the urging of WWI, WWI and Korean War veterans in 1954.
The annual Staten Island Veterans Day ceremony was originally sponsored on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month at Ocean View Cemetery by a group of WWI veterans known as the Staten Island Barracks. As the vets aged out, the Veterans of Foreign Wars picked up the guidon and continued the services. In 2014, the United Staten Island Veterans Organization (USIVO) began sponsoring the annual ceremony.
This year's keynote speaker is veterans advocate JoAnne
Nolemi, Founder/President of The Island Heroes Project, which researches and remembers the 1.300 men and women from Staten Island who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in all wars. Their mission is to discover, identify and research Staten Island's war dead and share with students, young people and veterans. Nolemi served 20 years as Director of Choruses at Tottenville High School, where she integrated her passion for Staten Island's fallen heroes. The students identified over 70 Islanders killed in action in WWI that to this day are not listed on the WWI Memorial at Hero Park. She has been recognized as a NYS Woman of Distinction, NYS Educator of the Year, NYC Big Apple Award and CUNY High School Educator of the year. She has also received awards from the Four Chaplains Foundation, the American Legion and the VFW. Her family served in the American Revolution and the Civil War.
A ceremonial rifle volley will be done by the Marine Corps League, Detachment 246 followed by Taps, played by the Tottenville High School Ceremonial Taps Unit under the direction o fLaurie D'Amico.
Immediately following the ceremony, USIVO will go next door to Frederick Douglass Memorial Park to pay respects to fellow veteran and member of the Richmond District 369th Veterans Association Leon .J Wallace at Frederic Douglass Memorial Park, New York City's only African-American cemetery.
