You're Invited to a Free Concert at the newly opened Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) at the World Trade Center.
Join The U.S. Army Field Band Soldiers’ Chorus and PAC NYC for a dynamic multimedia concert honoring those heroes that walk among us: from the Greatest Generation, who inspired a world to embrace the ideals of democracy, to the professional fighting force that emerged following the attacks of September 11, 2001. Together, we salute their selfless service and we celebrate what it means to answer the call.
Founded in 1957, the Soldiers’ Chorus is the vocal component of The United States Army Field Band of Washington, DC. This 29-member mixed chorus travels throughout the nation and abroad, performing both independently and jointly with the Army Field Band’s Concert Band. The Soldiers’ Chorus has collaborated with the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, and the Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Nashville, and National symphony orchestras. The ensemble is a mainstay of PBS’s annual National Memorial Day Concert and has performed for the state funerals of Presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.
About PAC NYC
The inaugural season showcases the unparalleled flexibility of three performing arts venues inside PAC NYC: the John E. Zuccotti Theater (seating up to 450 people), the Mike Nichols Theater (seating up to 250) and the Doris Duke Foundation Theater (seating up to 99). The venues can be used individually or combined (total capacity up to 950 seats) with configurations that include theater-in-the-round, end stage, thrust and traverse, to accommodate artistic innovation that can engage and delight audiences in new ways at every visit.
Named for businessman, philanthropist and benefactor Ronald O. Perelman, the Perelman Performing Arts Center is a 138-foot-tall, cube-shaped building with radically flexible capabilities designed by the architecture firm REX, led by founding principal Joshua Ramus. REX’s design, created in collaboration with executive architect Davis Brody Bond, theater consultant Charcoalblue and acoustician Threshold Acoustics, is conceived for an artistic program that will have vast and varied needs to serve New York’s extraordinarily diverse arts community. The building is wrapped in nearly 5,000 half-inch thick marble tiles which have been book matched to create a symmetrical pattern, which is identical on all four sides of the building. The marble façade allows light to radiate in during the day and glow out during the evening. David Rockwell and his architecture and design firm Rockwell Group designed the interior of the lobby and restaurant with a dynamic, glowing ceiling visible from the street to create an inviting entry experience. The lobby's restaurant Metropolis by chef Marcus Samuelsson, along with the bar and outdoor terrace, offers a new gathering space for the Lower Manhattan community.

On 10/09 the WVE&T (Women Veterans Empowered & Thriving) will host an evening of storytelling and dance by Aurita Maldonado at 7:00pm EST. For more information contact Jenny Pacanowski, [email protected] or click the link below.
Join WVE&T (Women Veterans Empowered & Thriving) in person at the Hellertown American Legion or join on the zoom livestream for an evening of storytelling and dance by Aurita Maldonado, a Puerto Rican US Army veteran, Purple Heart recipient, best selling author, and Afro Latín dance instructor who has danced intimately with Death.
She served more than 8 years in the military including two combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan.
After a 200 lb. IED exploded directly under her vehicle and 3 rounds hit her pack, she chose to simplify her life and follow her dreams.
Aurita left military service and realized that society had become a place where combat veterans would rather commit suicide than live. Many who “have it all” are discovering that they still feel miserable but can’t figure out why. They feel powerless under the boredom of what society deems necessary.
Aurita moved to Haines, AK in 2010 to become a rafting guide in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve and face her PTSD while running through the wilderness.
In 2012, she contracted a serious case of rat lungworm, which paralyzed her from the waist down, leaving her in a wheelchair with neuropathy over her entire body. Aurita was told she would not walk again, but they misjudged her determination.
Her inspirational recovery to walk again and face her post traumatic stress disorder is an incredible story called "The Zen of Dancing in the Rain."
The Zen of Dancing in the Rain is a fascinating, inspiring story written in a fast-paced and easy to read style that will remind you that you can choose to become your own science experiment, your own work of art, your own dance. It will spark in you a transformation of perspective from being one's worst critic to one's best friend. Called by therapists, "A how-to on living authentically mind, body, and soul with the life you have been given and the life you get to create," Aurita's story will take you on a journey through war, paralysis, and sorrow mirroring love, adventure, and joy. It will remind you that you don't need permission to be the first person to do something differently in your family. You may find yourself changing your life after reading this book. Opportunity: New journalism fellowship for a military veteran at NBC10 in Philadelphia.
Requirements:
Strong research skills
Interest in journalism & desire to learn/develop broadcast skills
Some degree of newsroom and/or video/broadcast production experience
Role Details: Starts early November; in-person only, $20/hour, 40-hour weeks.
Application Deadline: October 31, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
Military Veterans in Journalism announced today a new partnership with NBCUniversal and the Wyncote Foundation to launch a new fellowship designed to employ a veteran as a journalist in NBCUniversal’s Philadelphia affiliate newsroom.
Thanks to support from the Wyncote Foundation, veterans who are members of Military Veterans in Journalism are now eligible to apply for this paid, in-person, six-month reporting fellowship at NBC10 that will start in early November. The chosen fellow will assist in filling critical coverage gaps on the military and veteran affairs beats in the Philadelphia area.
“Supporting a veteran with a passion for journalism is not only a great opportunity for NBC10 but also a powerful way to amplify diverse voices in our newsroom,” said Elizabeth Flores, VP of News for NBC10 and Telemundo62. “We embrace the value that a veteran brings to our team, and we are excited to create an inclusive space that nurtures their talent and experiences. Together, we can make a significant impact and ensure that all perspectives are represented in our stories.”
This fellowship program provides an opportunity for a military veteran journalist to further develop their broadcast news skills and build both a network of world-class journalists and a portfolio of work. During the program, the selected fellow can expect to work with newsroom management and news team members to support news coverage and production, work with producers and reporters on live shots and coverage, and learn and assist with fast-channel content publication.
“Military Veterans in Journalism is proud to continue our collaborative work with NBCUniversal to diversify America’s newsrooms through the hiring of more military veterans,” said Devon Lancia, MVJ Partnerships Director. “This fellowship presents a great opportunity for vets to help produce news that makes a difference in the Philadelphia community. We’re pleased to provide this fellowship and thankful for the Wyncote Foundation and NBC10 team’s support.”
The chosen fellow will report to NBC10’s news director. Veterans who are recent college graduates, transitioning or early in their civilian journalism careers are encouraged to apply for this opportunity. Ideal fellowship candidates will have some experience reporting and writing on deadline for a general audience. Join NYC H2O along with the Natural Resources Protective Association and Council Member Carr for a volunteer cleanup at Oakwood Beach!
This event is happening as part of the 12th annual Riverkeeper Sweep! Every year, thousands of volunteers come together across hundreds of miles of shoreline in New York City and the Hudson Valley for the Annual Riverkeeper Sweep, a day of service for the Hudson River. Volunteers clean up tons of trash, plant healthy vegetation, and remove invasive plant species at more than 100 locations.
Oakwood Beach and adjoining wetlands deal with a double-edged sword of being a secret to most of Staten island. The site holds one of the highest density populations of Osprey seen on the Island. While the wildlife holds strong, the few people that are around, and the close proximity to a waste plant, brings in a huge amount of trash.
If anyone needs a ride there, please let me know before Sept 30th. Thanks!

The fellow will work 40 hours per week and earn $20 per hour for the duration of their fellowship.
Applicants for this internship may apply online with Military Veterans in Journalism. The deadline to apply is October 31 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

The 2-hour virtual program screens the 58 minute documentary Stranger At Home followed by a moderated Q&A discussion with Host Eva Usadi, filmmakers Sheila Higgins, Beth Dolan, and the film’s cast, to discuss topics spotlighted in the film: moral injury, trauma, stigma, family resilience and reforming Military mental health policy. This ticketed/suggested donation event takes place from October 22 to October 26, 2023 with a Q&A on October 26th at 8pm Eastern.
STRANGER AT HOME will be premiering on the PBS World Channel on November 11, 2023 in 70% of the country.
“This brave film delivers excruciating insight into the intense preparation soldiers receive going into war and the devastating neglect they experience when it's over. It also makes a crystal-clear case for what could and should be done to mitigate the mental health issues.” (K. Kornmeier/social justice advocate)
Stranger At Home: Healing The Psychological Wounds of War, intimately contrasts the stories of three veterans with their singularly profound message which is: mental health reform is the most critical human rights frontier.
The fellow will work 40 hours per week and earn $20 per hour for the duration of their fellowship.
Applicants for this internship may apply online with Military Veterans in Journalism. The deadline to apply is October 31 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
