On December 9, the Bob Woodruff Foundation and Legal Services Corporation (LSC) hosted a legal services Lunch & Learn. During this panel, attendees heard from experts about civil legal issues that veterans may experience, got tips about how to identify them, and learned how to connect veterans with attorneys who can help them resolve those issues. The event featured:
The panelists discussed both veteran-specific legal issues, such as denial of VA benefits, and general legal issues, such as eviction, child custody and support, and debt collection.
Legal needs underpin many issues veterans experience post-service. For example, VA’s Community Homelessness Assessment, Local Education and Networking Groups (CHALENG) survey found that the top five needs among homeless and at-risk veterans require legal support.
We encourage you to review this report published by LSC’s Veterans Task Force. The task force's report highlights best practices and model programs that provide effective, integrated services to veterans and offers tips for replicating successful programs. It also offers recommendations for engaging attorneys to provide legal assistance on a pro bono basis.
