About the position

The Major Gifts Officer will report to the Chief Development Officer and is responsible for leading all facets of BWF relationship management and engagement with its individual, family and foundation donor base.  Our individual, family and foundation donors make our work possible through their ongoing and exceptional generosity.  The Major Gifts Officer will conduct and oversee activities with our donor base, including cultivation, retention, growth, and administrative aspects of the BWF growth plan, including coordination and activation of resources, technology platforms and content from across the integrated BWF team.  This role will focus on individual, family and foundation relationships and related outreach, including timely, personalized and strategic communications needs for our current and prospective donor base.  This role will be conversant in a range of development programs and options, including donor relations, technology-based fundraising, creative development of new fundraising programs, and the interpersonal skills required for a diverse set of relationship management requirements.  These skills will be essential so that the Major Gifts Officer can create short and long-term plans for donor retention, expansion of our donor base, and identification of new opportunities.  This is a growth-focused role for an experienced and proven fundraising professional or similar background, with the opportunity to pursue results-focused development goals with clear KPIs. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Chief Development Officer to contribute to annual revenue planning and forecasts via development of revenue projections attributed to major gifts (recurring, retained, prospective and incremental)
  • Manage a portfolio of over 200 donors and prospects, targeting 10% growth year over year through a combination of retention and new donors
    • Portfolio management will include maintaining detailed records via Salesforce and weekly updates to BWF pipeline tracking
  • Develop an annual Major Gifts outreach plan, outlining pre-planned outreach timing/content with the flexibility to include ad hoc/opportunistic outreach based on current events or emerging opportunities
    • With digital and event-based outreach in support, the Major Gifts Officer’s annual outreach plan will emphasize high-touch, personal interaction with our most important individual and family donors
    • Major Gifts annual plan will include event-based engagement opportunities (both live and virtual) to gather and cultivate priority major gift prospects
    • Partner with Events Manager to reinforce existing and create new donor-driven revenue generating potential for events; this effort includes, but is not limited to, the incorporation of new technology for donor engagement and fundraising at events and reimagining/repurposing event structure to optimize fundraising potential
  • Cultivate and refine a strong working knowledge of BWF, our mission, our programs and our impact to be a compelling, expert storyteller and ambassador of our work
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and organizer for the BWF Development team on individual/family donor-focused development initiatives including SUFH sponsorship (and all related sponsorship opportunities, including but not limited to the Green Room, Service Member Dinner, VIP Reception, etc.), SUFH ticketing, and VIP and priority donor list management
  • Represent the Development Team across BWF, providing details and context on our major gifts strategy and sourcing information, expertise and content that supports major gifts fundraising outreach and cultivation
  • Develop, implement and refresh a proactive individual giving strategy that reflects industry best practices and the ongoing use of technology/business intelligence platforms to increase efficient, targeted outreach and conversion
  • Partner with the Development Content Manager and Communications Manager to develop focused, customizable, relevant and regularly refreshed outreach materials to support Major Gifts cultivation efforts.
  • Contribute ideation, preparation and delivery of tactical and strategic updates on Major Gifts requested by the leadership team, board of directors and other priority donors
  • Partner with the Development Operations Officer to develop a comprehensive list and calendar of key delivery dates for major grants and sources, including priority individual donors, family and individual foundations, new foundation sources, and initiatives to ensure timely response and retention/growth of established donor resource base
  • Represent the Bob Woodruff Foundation at priority events for donor relations, including all primary fundraising events, VOWS events, and other new opportunities as determined by the Chief Development Officer and CEO
  • Maintain, update and refresh insights on priority Major Gifts relationships and individual donors to ensure timely and personalized recommendations to the founders and Board of Directors as required

Qualifications

Core qualifications and attributes of the successful candidate include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, business development, nonprofit management and development or related field
  • 5-7 years’ experience in a nonprofit development role or for-profit business development role or sales; national-level experience preferred
  • Exceptional skills in the areas of interpersonal interactions, professional discretion, confidentiality and accountability
  • High degree of initiative and strategic problem solving, focused on ideal outcome vs. most achievable outcome
  • Proven track record of development experience, including annual, event-based, and customizable programs and initiatives to drive fundraising performance
  • Experience supporting the fundraising and sponsor relations aspects of complex events of varying sizes and across multiple objectives (fundraising, awareness, networking/influencer events, etc.)
  • Able to drive the on-time and on-brand delivery of fundraising campaigns, development components of event management, and related communications and collateral deliverables
  • Strong interest in and understanding of the Bob Woodruff Foundation’s mission; related work experience with military service members or veterans preferred
  • Effective networker and experience in strengthening relations with development partners across the full range of disciplines, including communications and sponsor relations
  • Excellent verbal and written communications, especially adept at developing and pitching persuasive development presentations and execution plans
  • Able to work effectively as part of a small, proactive team
    Proficient with Microsoft Office, Salesforce and other CRM systems as designated by the foundation
  • Ability to work for extended days and on weekends during critical points in grant or program cycles or for major planned events
