Today, the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) announced a total investment of nearly $4 million awarded to 18 organizations with programs that serve post-9/11 veterans, service members, and their families. These grantees address the Foundation’s key focus areas of education and employment, quality of life, and rehabilitation and recovery.

“Our Fall 2019 Grant Cycle represents a culmination of our strategic growth and our commitment to the military-veteran communities,” said Anne Marie Dougherty, Chief Executive Officer of the Bob Woodruff Foundation. “These grants – some of the largest in our foundation’s history – capitalize on our valued partnerships with best-in-class organizations and subject matter experts to shape a portfolio of programs making a significant impact in the lives of veterans, service members, their families, and caregivers.”

This portfolio includes several major grants to programs that promote healthy lifestyles and foster greater community engagement with the veteran population, representing a continuation of our efforts as an NFL Salute To Service partner. The Fall 2019 Grant Cycle also executes on a significant investment of $6 million from the Qatar Harvey Fund (QHF) across multiple focus areas, supporting programs that provide necessary and long-term support to veterans impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Harvey on the Texas Gulf Coast two years ago.

The rehabilitation and recovery portfolio features longtime partners who are providing vital mental health care to veterans and military families in New York City, and who are complementing federal services to help veterans maintain healthy intimate relationships. With support from QHF, we are funding innovative treatments for service-connected mental health conditions. These grants will help veterans in the Texas Gulf Coast region through a focus on evidence-based treatment, by both training clinicians and supporting their work to ensure they are clinically qualified to treat PTSD. While we build the clinical expertise in the region, we will also provide intensive outpatient clinical care to veterans who are currently struggling with PTSD and support the family members of impacted veterans.

Our broad portfolio of quality of life grants includes an exciting range of interventions that draw from the arts, physical activity, peer support, and legal services. We are facilitating the continued expansion of medical-legal partnerships across VA medical facilities, training veterans as yoga instructors to provide their fellow veterans with complementary care, providing veterans with the benefit of long-term engagement in the arts, funding social work support to veterans on NYC college campuses, and enabling veterans to participate in adaptive sports opportunities nationwide. We are proud to be investing in the initial national development and implementation of wheelchair football, made possible by our partnership with the NFL Foundation.

Our grants addressing education and employment needs focus primarily on career opportunities for the most vulnerable veterans, those at risk of homelessness. We are also granting to an entrepreneurial program that helps veterans and military family members assess and validate the viability of a business plan and determine whether they are ready to pursue their entrepreneurship opportunity.
