The Bob Woodruff Foundation held its 2nd annual Generous Persson Award Ceremony, named in memory of philanthropist, Helen K. Persson, at the Kimpton Hotel Eventi, Oct. 5. Honored were Cristina Carlino, beauty industry leader and social entrepreneur, Duncan Niederauer, former CEO of the New York Stock Exchange, and Sam Springsteen. They were chosen for their extraordinary commitment to our nation’s injured veterans and their families.

“We are so grateful to Cristina, Duncan and Sam for all they have done for our nation’s impacted veterans through our foundation,” said Bob Woodruff, ABC News correspondent and cofounder of the Bob Woodruff Foundation. “Each would probably say they don’t deserve this—however, it’s that humility that makes their generosity so extraordinary.”

The award honors the legacy of Persson, who understood the wounds of war. A lieutenant commander in the Navy Nurse Corps during World War II, it was her initial gift of $1 million that helped the Bob Woodruff Foundation grow its mission from a small, family foundation to a nationally-recognized leader among veteran-focused organizations.

Carlino, best-known for founding the Philosophy brand of personal care and beauty products, has not only made generous contributions through her businesses, she has contributed her time, influence and creative expertise to help BWF reach a wider donor base.

Niederauer, who is a member of BWF’s Leadership Council, is leveraging his vast experience and network to help the Bob Woodruff Foundation create a “single front door” of access to resources for returning veterans. He also serves on the boards of several veteran-focused nonprofits.

Springsteen used the healing power of music to enrich the lives of more than 100 veterans and their loved ones, by inviting them to concerts during Bruce Springsteen’s River Tour. For many, that would have been enough; however, Springsteen worked with tour staff to ensure prime seating and backstage access for these injured heroes.

An intimate, invitation-only event, attendees at the awards included leaders in entertainment, business and philanthropy. Beyond recognizing the honorees, it was an opportunity to promote the work of the foundation.

Since its start in 2006, the Bob Woodruff Foundation has invested more than $33 million to find, fund and shape programs that create long-lasting, positive outcomes for veterans and their families nationwide.
