VA disability compensation offers a monthly tax free payment to veterans who became sick or injured while serving in the military and to veterans whose service made an existing condition worse. However, many veterans fail to apply for their benefits. This session will navigate the basics of the VA claim process and provide a better understanding of the value of the tax-free benefits for the veteran and their family. We will also explain what is needed to file a claim and the benefits of working with a VSO.
Topics Included cover:
- Finding and working with a VSO
- What is needed to file a claim
- How total disability rating is determined
- Other VA benefits that may be available

8/5/2023 LI Veterans Reunion at American Airpower Museum after Honor Flight Trip to Washington, D.C.
The public is invited to another great event at the American Airpower Museum. On Saturday, August 5, 2023, we’re co-hosting a patriotic reunion of 37 Vietnam War, two World War II and five Korean War veterans, who took a flight to Washington, D.C. on April 29, 2023. On that historic day, Honor Flight Long Island escorted this band of brothers on a FREE early a.m. flight to our nation’s capital. Veterans and their guardians visited WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War Memorials, Arlington National Cemetery for a “Changing of the Guard,” the Air Force Memorial and Iwo Jima Memorial. They returned to Islip MacArthur Airport that evening for a raucous welcome by the Nassau County Fire Fighters Pipe and Drum Band, plus thunderous applause from hundreds of family, friends and supporters!
On Saturday, August 5th, the Museum’s doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the reunion runs from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at AAM, 1230 New Highway, Farmingdale, NY 11735 – (631) 293-6398, www.americanairpowermuseum.org. The public is welcome to attend and applaud these veterans, especially during our “Ceremony of Honors,” as each is presented with a Tribute Journal full of photos taken during their day in D.C. Members of the public arriving for the event from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. may attend FREE of charge! After 12:00 p.m., regular Museum admission is free for members, $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and veterans, $10 for children ages 5-12 and free for children ages 4 and under.
This great patriotic celebration includes speeches by Honor Flight LI President Bill Jones and AAM President and Founder Jeff Clyman. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Band will play a popular medley known as the “Armed Forces Salute,” featuring five official melodies of the U.S. Armed Forces: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Free cake, coffee and refreshments provided by Honor Flight will be enjoyed by all! Co-hosts AAM and Honor Flight LI encourage public participation in this historic event, to help us honor 44 of Long island’s home-grown heroes for their service to our great nation! 8/16/2023 Grief and Bereavement Amongst Veterans

This workshop will explore basic elements of grief/bereavement, then go further into how the veteran population may experience the grief process, and also find the most effective areas of support. iRest Meditation
Cost: Free
iRest is a deep meditation practice used worldwide for its positive impact on the mind and body. This practice relieves stress and pain, improves sleep, and helps reset your nervous system.
Used in military and first responder settings as a top-tier approach to mental health & wellness, iRest is rapidly growing in popularity in our guardian communities.
We hope you’ll join another of our iRest Meditation Experiences led by Annie Okerlin — we’ve hosted several already this year, and both guardians & our GR team members have found them very relaxing. In the words of one of our Peer Leaders who is a trauma therapist & social worker and has worked in Law Enforcement & Fire:
“After trying a few iRest classes, I’m eager to do more… everyone I’ve talked to who has tried it said it’s extremely helpful to relax & very beneficial as a healthy new hobby. It’s worth setting aside the time — stop procrastinating & show up. This is one thing you shouldn’t wait to try.”
This is our first time offering it in-person, so please join us if you’re in the area! We also have it available via Zoom for those of you who cannot join us.

West Point to open nearly 200-year-old time capsule found at Kosciusko monument
The U.S. Military Academy plans to open it on Aug. 28.
TASK & PURPOSE
BY NICHOLAS SLAYTON | AUG 20, 2023
What did soldiers in the 1820s care about enough to preserve for future generations? That might get answered soon. Historians at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York plan on opening a recently discovered, nearly 200-year-old time capsule next week.
The U.S. Military Academy will be opening the capsule and displaying what’s inside of it on August 28 at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday, Aug. 28 in Robinson Auditorium at Thayer Hall. And West Point plans to livestream the entire event.
“This time capsule is truly a unique discovery, and we are excited to open it and see what the cadets left us nearly two centuries ago,” U.S. Military Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Steve Gilland said in a statement. “The capsule’s contents will certainly add to the West Point story and is another example of past generations of cadets gripping hands with present and future generations.
