The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Red Rock Military Services

Service Area: Oklahoma

Goal: Improve the mental health and wellbeing of at least 100 military children and families by increasing their access to high-quality mental health care

The Lawton, Oklahoma area is home to more than 7,000 post-9/11 veterans, 13,000 active-duty service members, and 12,000 family members. The Steven A. Cohen Military Family at Red Rock Military Services (RRMS) is working to fill significant gaps in mental health care for service members, veterans, and their families in their area. The majority of counties RRMS serves meet the Health Resources and Services Administration’s definition for a medically underserved area, with an estimated gap of 83 to 94 percent of individuals who need behavioral health services but are not receiving them. Military-connected children and teens account for 20 percent of RRMS’ clients, and are presenting with challenges such as anxiety, adjustment issues, and behavioral concerns. This BWF investment will increase RRMS’ capacity to meet the mental health needs of military-connected youth by training additional clinicians in evidence-based therapies for children and teens, supporting individual and group clinical care that is not reimbursable under TRICARE, and providing materials for group therapy, filial therapy (a psychoeducational family intervention), and play therapy. Overall, this investment will improve the mental health and wellbeing of at least 100 military children and families by increasing their access to high-quality mental health care.
