The Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO) in Georgia supports veterans and their families by addressing challenges related to housing and well-being. Through their intake process, VEO identifies root causes of displacement and barriers that impact veterans’ self-sufficiency. They use this information to create individualized support plans. Through services that include meals, advocacy and housing vouchers, VEO empowers veterans to transition into stable living conditions.

VEO’s Unsheltered to Housed program provides a safe, transitional living environment with on-site case management services. The team helps veterans stabilize, find employment, and move into permanent housing.

Among the veterans assisted by the VEO, Mr. White stands out because of the numerous challenges he overcame, his hopefulness, and his gratitude to VEO.

Following an injury in January 2023 while working at the post office, Mr. White faced a series of challenges. He had emergency surgery in March due to life-threatening blood clots in his heart and lungs. Unable to work and without income, his sick leave was depleted, and he was evicted in August. Sleeping in his truck for a week while using an oxygen tank, he sought help from VEO. A retiree, Mr. White’s goal to save money for permanent housing, highlighting VEO’s crucial support in his journey toward stability.

Cheyanne Gordon, our strategic partnership specialist, spoke with Mr. White to understand the important role VEO played in his life.

Cheyanne Gordon: Mr. White, you mentioned that during a particularly challenging time in your life, the VEO was there to provide support. The help was especially meaningful after the tragic loss of your girlfriend in October. Tell us more about the VEO’s impact has had on you.

Mr. White: Absolutely. After everything I was going through—losing my job, almost losing my life, sleeping in my car with an oxygen tank, and losing my girlfriend who took her life—V EO was there to comfort me. I felt like I was losing everything. VEO was a constant source of support. I prayed for them a lot because they were so kind and ensured I had everything I needed, including food and other necessities. Their presence made a difference. Initially, I didn’t think anyone cared about my situation. However, VEO proved me wrong. They have shown genuine care and support for veterans like myself, which I truly appreciate. They’re making a positive difference in the lives of veterans, and I’m grateful for their assistance.

CG: It’s clear VEO provides more than material support. Can you speak to their efforts to prevent isolation and foster a sense of community among veterans?

Mr. White: VEO understands the importance of preventing isolation among veterans, many of whom may not be used to sharing their struggles openly. They’ve created a supportive environment where veterans can develop friendships and support networks. This has been invaluable for me and many others.

CG: Based on your experience, what advice would you give to other veterans facing similar challenges?

Mr. White: I would advise reaching out to VEO for support. They are here for you. It’s important to take advantage of the resources and assistance they offer. Don’t hesitate to seek help when you need it.

CG: Is there anything else you’d like to share about VEO’s ongoing support for veterans?

Mr. White: VEO has been a lifeline for me. They provide opportunities for veterans to move forward. They offered their support with open arms. I’m truly grateful for everything they’ve done for me and veterans in need.

Looking ahead, VEO plans to expand its housing facilities, develop its workforce program further, and encourage veteran involvement through volunteering. Their goal is to inspire others and promote long-term stability within the veteran community in Atlanta.

Through a recent NFL-BWF Healthy Lifestyles and Creating Community (HLCC) grant, VEO is able provide daily meals, transportation to medical appointments and other necessary services, and community classes on topics such as financial literacy and VA benefits to at least 30 veterans for one year. These veterans will live in VEO’s transitional housing to ensure their basic needs are met as they work toward long-term housing stability. Additionally, this funding will support street and shelter outreach to identify veterans experiencing homelessness in the community and connect them to housing and supportive services.
